A few years ago, keyboard debates were about clicky vs linear switches. Today, it's all about magnetic Hall effect switches and rapid trigger. Here's what matters for competitive gaming and what's just marketing.

Switch types quickly

  • **Linear:** smooth, no bump. Popular for gaming.
  • **Tactile:** small bump when the key activates. Great for typing.
  • **Clicky:** bump plus a click sound. Loud and annoying on voice chat.
  • **Hall effect (magnetic):** uses magnets to detect key position, allowing adjustable actuation and rapid trigger.

What rapid trigger does

Normal switches reset at a fixed point. Rapid trigger resets the key as soon as you start lifting it. In tactical shooters, this makes counter-strafing and quick stops faster and more precise.

In games where precise movement matters, rapid trigger is a real advantage. In MOBAs or MMOs, it matters much less.

Adjustable actuation

Hall effect keyboards let you set how far a key needs to be pressed. Set it shallow for movement keys, deeper for keys you don't want to hit by accident.

Do you need one?

  • **Tactical FPS players:** yes, rapid trigger is worth it.
  • **Other competitive genres:** nice, not essential.
  • **Casual players:** any decent keyboard is fine.

Layout and size

Many competitive players use 60 or 65 percent keyboards for more mouse space. TKL (tenkeyless) is a good compromise if you need arrow keys and function keys.

Things not worth paying for

  • Fancy RGB effects
  • Macro keys you'll never use
  • Software that bloats your PC

Things worth paying for

  • Good stabilizers on larger keys
  • Durable keycaps like PBT
  • Onboard memory for settings

Where to buy

Amazon has a huge range of Hall effect keyboards from big and small brands. Newegg often discounts gaming keyboards during PC hardware sales. Best Buy has keyboards on display so you can try switches in person. Walmart carries mainstream gaming keyboards at good prices.

Verdict

If you play tactical shooters seriously, get a Hall effect keyboard with rapid trigger. Otherwise, pick a switch that feels good and save the money for a better mouse or monitor.
